Nation, Globalization, and Media

Globalization is a concept of a worldwide homogenization by interconnecting economy and cultural exchanges. The wave of globalization did hit Cambodia when they opened up their economy to the world. Despite the danger of their traditional culture, Cambodia gradually has been raising the economic presence in the world, which also brought a relatively high standard of living to the people. While the globalization created the economic prosperity across the nation, people who classified as a poor clearly have suffered from this global movement. As the economic focus of the nation is switched to on technology or trading, many peasant lost their job and had to move to cities such as Phnom Penh, which now has more than 3 million populations. Because the level of the government management did not develop as much as the economy, those big cities end up being a chaos with the government’s economic mismanagement. Thus the gap between the rich and the poor is still expanding. Whereas the rich takes advantage of the globalization, the poor is not able to find a way to improve their living standard. The government needs to issue wiser and transparent economic policies which would be able to fairly distribute the wealth to their people. The sustainable policy by the health government will be a key to get the most from the globalization process. The arrangement of the tax system is one of the potential solutions to be a successful nation since their tax revenue from GDP ratio is very low.

But how are people actually feeling amid this globalization? Perhaps Cambodian people may find themselves more connected to the rest of the world than before even though all of them may not enjoy their economic success. Due to the widespread of social media, people, especially youth, are exposed to the connectivity to the world. The statistics shows the rapid increasing number of people using social network in Cambodia. This can be a useful tool to stop the decay of their traditional culture by informing them to the world via the social network like Facebook or Twitter. Advertising their culture may raise the awareness of the cultural reservation. The development of internet enabled people to have quick and easy communication without any concern about the distance. For instance, all newspaper in Cambodia has their website so that people all over the country can review them quickly wherever they are. In this sense, the globalization gradually benefits them through the media and internet despite the relatively slower penetration than other countries.

In conclusion, it is unquestionable that globalization has both positive and negative impacts on Cambodian society. The government needs to lead their country with sustainable policies in order not to miss economic opportunities. Also they should take advantage of the internet or media since they became a central part of business and a key to reserve their tradition which is likely to be forgotten in globalization process.
